Aude department of France, April 2021
In February 2020, volunteers, friends and neighbours participated in a tree planting day on Vincent’s farm. This activity was part of the A Tree for You planting programme. Due to the Covid-19 health crisis, not all the plants could be delivered. Initially, 570 trees were scheduled but only 493 were planted. The final trees were planted in November 2020.
Last November, the seedlings were planted by hand and mulched with shredded material. A fence was built around the planting area, protecting the young trees from wild animals.
Following the extremely hot summer of 2020, Vincent lost nine olive trees, four quince, one oak and one cherry tree. The olive trees and oak have already been replaced. The rest of the seedlings were planted February 2021. Maintenance and weed and scrub management were completed in mid-March.
A total of twelve different species were planted on Vincent’s plots. The farmer is pleased and now busy with market gardening and growing cereals at the foot of the young trees. Vincent remains vigilant and takes great care of the planted trees. He knows he will certainly have to do some watering during the summer, depending on the weather.
Tree pruning will take place over the summer and monitoring will serve to identify trees that require corrective measures (replacement, renewal of mulching, occasional water supply, pruning).
Now all that remains is to take care of these trees and see them grow!
